Kakinada: Though the city attained ‘smart city’ tag two years ago, it still seems to have a long way to achieve minimum standards ranging from stray dog and stray pig menace to lack of dumping yard facility.Lack of elected body since completion of previous term in the year 2011, official apathy, personal interests of some of the staff in sanitation department , political support to the people involved in such activities are said to be some of the reasons for the existing situation.
It is estimated that there are more than 10,000 stray dogs in the city and around 3,000 starry pigs, wandering in the streets. The number of dog bite cases increased significantly causing locals to worry.East Godavari CPI secretary Tatipaka Madhu alleged that they represented these issues to the collector, the special officer of the civic body several times but nothing concrete emerged on these representations.
“We are now pinning hopes on new collector Kartikeya Mishra and are expecting that he will redress these grievances,” he said. When contacted Kakinada Municipal Corporation health Officer Dr Srinivasa Kayak said that out of 7,000 identified stray dogs the ABC (Animal Birth Control) has been completed to more than 3,000. “We are intuiting measures to raise the number of kennels from the present 10 to 30 shortly to accommodate more starry dogs,”he said. Regarding stray pigs, though a three acre site at Chollangi village in Kakinada suburbs was allotted to pig rearers, they are not moved there under one pretext or other.
