Srikakulam: Funds are being misused in the name of school, college and hostel repairs in Sitampeta Agency area under Integrated Tribal Development Authority (ITDA) limits in the district. In all, 58 schools, colleges and residential schools are being run in 20 mandals in the Agency under the tribal welfare department.

Every year, the state government is allocating Rs 2 lakh to Rs 3 lakh for each educational institution for repair works before reopening of the schools. But these funds are not being utilised properly by the ITDA engineering department. It is learnt that they are clearing bills without repairs works. Hence, students are facing problems due to lack of facilities.

As per the government norms fixed for tribal area works, Village Level Tribal Development Agency (VTDA) or Local School Committee have to take up these repair works on a nomination basis as tender process is not required for these works worth up to Rs 10 lakh.

But either the school committee or VTDA is not taking up these repair works and benamis to big contractors are taking up the works by managing school committee and VTDA. Engineering officials and benamis are colluding and misusing funds by performing repairs nominally. Another ridiculous thing is every year they are proposing for repairs at these institutions.
For all 58 educational institutions, Rs 116 crore was allotted in 2015, Rs 120 crore in 2016 and this summer same amount was released.

Two days ahead of schools reopening, repair works are not yet started at Baddumasangi, Budagarayi, Jangampeta and so many other schools in the Agency.Funds are being allotted every year for repair works for tribal welfare educational institutions, admitted ITDA executive engineer K.Ashok. This year they would start repair works soon, the EE added.
