Amaravati: The Election Commission on Thursday announced the by-election schedule for Nandyal Assembly constituency of Kurnool district where the election code came into force with immediate effect. As per the schedule, the filing of nominations will commence on July 29 and conclude on August 5.

The scrutiny of nominations will be held on August 7 and the last date for withdrawal of nominations is August 9. Polling will be conducted on August 23. Counting of votes will be taken up on August 28 and the results will be declared on the same day.

Nandyal by-election is taking place following the sudden demise of sitting MLA Bhuma Nagireddy, who passed away on March 12 this year. As both the ruling TDP and opposition YSRCP are considering the bypoll as a prestigious election, stiff fight is expected between both the parties.

The TDP has fielded Bhuma Brahmananda Reddy, nephew of Bhuma Nagireddy, as its candidate while the YSCRP announced the candidature of Silpa Mohan Reddy.

It may be recalled that Bhuma Nagireddy who won the Nandyal seat as YSRCP candidate during the 2014 elections, later defected to the TDP.

Following the demise of Nagireddy, the Nandyal seat fell vacant and the YSRCP announced that it will contest the by-election, showing reason that the seat belonged to it, rejecting the ruling TDP’s request to allow the election to be unanimous.
