Adoni (Kurnool): The All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) staged a demonstration here on Thursday, demanding immediate closure of liquor shops in the residential area of Indiranagar in the town. The effigy of ‘madyam mahammari’ was set on fire.

Addressing the protestors, AIDWA district general secretary Alivelamma and leader PS Sujata, Anti-liquor Struggle Committee leader Sujanamma accused the government of adopting a negligent attitude on the issue even after various forms of protest to press the demand were organised.

They and other speakers like CPM town secretary D Lakshmanna, YSRCP leaders Chalapati and Tayanna, SFI and DYFI leaders Ravi, Uchcharappa, Veeresh, Indiranagar Colony residents N Keera, Narsimhulu and Paru found fault with the administration in securing revenue by permitting the sale of liquor.

The speakers stated that women were in up in arms voluntarily across the district against running of liquor shops, while calling upon officials concerned at least now to take note of the protest and ensure closure of the shops. They warned of intensifying the agitation if the administration did not concede the demand.

Among the participants were the colony residents Venkatalakshmi, Munemma, Maremma, Lakshmi and Hanumakka.
