Observing the International Day of Climate Action with a theme ‘Let’s protect the environment and live eco-friendly’, a workshop was organised by Bapuji Rural Enlightenment and Development Society (BREDS) at AS Raja College here on Tuesday.
According to organisers, several environmental awareness programmes were being taken up by BREDS in connection with the International Day of Climate Action which is being observed by 181 countries. Participating in the programme, EAS Sarma said: “This is a programme for the future generation’s sustainability. Change in eating habits help protect environment.”
Citing European Union's ‘Economic and Scientific Policy 2007’, historian and environmentalist Rani Sarma said extreme changes have been taken place in the environment due to global warming. As a result, icebergs have been melting and contributing to rise in the sea levels and cyclones, she said.
The World Meteorological Organisation's ‘Assessment of Tropical Cyclone and Climate Change – 2010’ report warned that global warming causes increase in severity of cyclones and floods, she pointed out.

NSS Coordinator P Oormila said that as per statistics nearly 170 lakh hectares of forests was being lost per year due to over exploitation of natural resources. Students from AS Raja Junior College and SVVP Degree College expressed their views on protection of environment, natural resources and biodiversity.
Rajasekhar from A S Raja College, K Satyanarayana from BREDS, environment volunteers J Rajeswari, K Mallika, G Deviprasad and others participated.
