Visakhapatnam: The Central government aspiring to put the country among the world’s top five scientific powers, said Secretary of Department of Science and Technology (DST) Ashutosh Sharma.

Addressing a gathering at GITAM University 8th convocation here on Tuesday, Ashutosh said that country developed into a formidable power in several areas of science and technology and developed the Geo-Synchronous Launch Vehicles, Arihant nuclear submarine, fighter air crafts and ICBM AGNI-5, Chandrayaan and Mangalyaan Missions propelled India to the elite club of nations. The government has been investing heavily on technology-driven Green Revolution, he added.

He announced that the DST will be launching 'Visiting Advanced Joint Research Faculty' (VAJRA) scheme to attract the top performing scientists from abroad for conducting joint research in the country.

The DST has been planning to implement a few more schemes to focus on arresting the brain drain and encourage brain gain, Ashutosh said. He suggested that the universities should concentrate on the challenges of renewable energy, climate change, drinking water, sanitation and such other common problems particularly with a new mind set of interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary education and research out of traditional silos of knowledge.

Research by universities in these areas would have spin-offs unimaginable in terms of benefits to the common man, he added. GITAM Chancellor K Ramakrishna Rao gave away honorary D Sc to DST Secretary ProfAshutosh Sharma, Tata Memorial Hospital Director Rajendra Achyut Badwe and D Litt to noted Telugu writer and actor Gollapudi Maruthi Rao.

Four faculty of GITAM University presented the ‘Best Researcher' awards at the convocation. V Srinivas of Mechanical Engineering Department, M Jyothsna of the Department of Marketing, Radha Raghuramapatruni of the School of International Business and M Anitha of biotechnology received the awards. In all, 1,500 students, four M Phils and 75 research scholars (PhD) received their degrees. In all, 26 gold medals were presented.

Vice-Chancellor of GITAM University MS Prasada Rao presented a brief report on the university achievements and future plans. GITAM President MVVS Murthi, Vice-President M Gangadhara Rao, Pro Vice-Chancellors K Sivaramakrishna, Sivapullaiah, Sivaprasad and Registrar M Potharaju were present.
