The sedan, if launched here, would take full advantage of the FAME subsidy.Talking to Financial Express, N Raja, senior vice-president and director of Marketing & Sales, Toyota Kirloskar Motor, stated that it makes more sense to introduce hybrid variants of the existing models in the country rather than coming up with all-new hybrid model. He then hinted that the Toyota Corolla hybrid could be one such viable product.

Thanks to the significant incentive in the form of subsidy under the Indian government’s FAME (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric and hybrid vehicles), the sales of Camry Hybrid increased. Last year, the automaker managed to sell 1,000 units of the hybrid D-Segment sedan.

The Corolla Hybrid which is available in markets like China is expected to create a similar effect in the entry level D-Segment which is populated by the Skoda Octavia, Hyundai Elantra, Renault Fluence, Chevrolet Cruze and VW Jetta (none of them offer hybrid variant in India).

The China-spec Corolla Hybrid is powered by a 1.5-litre Atkinson petrol engine which is assisted by an electric motor to dish out a combined output of 99 PS. The sedan has a fuel efficiency rating of 20.40 kmpl in the Chinese driving cycle. It’s to be noted that Toyota has several hybrid powertrains at its disposal and could use any of the compatible ones for the India-spec Corolla.

The timeframe for launching the Toyota Corolla has not been revealed yet but when it goes on sale, it would be locally assembled alongside the Camry Hybrid. With the hybrid vehicles receiving various incentives and exemption from odd-even experiments, the hybrid Corolla could prove to be more popular than the regular variants.
