If NGT manages to extend the diesel ban to 11 more cities across India despite the plea from government and auto industry, it would seriously affect Crysta’s prospects.

Even as the NGT diesel ban threatens the new Toyota Innova Crysta’s future prospects, the vastly improved new-gen MPV has proved to be a massive hit among premium car buyers.

Despite being significantly more expensive than its predecessor, the people carrier has registered over 20,000 bookings. Luxurious interior, more equipment, and an overhauled exterior design struck a chord with the audience.

The overwhelming response could lead to a longer waiting period. According to N Raja, TKM’s senior VP and director of sales & marketing, the MPV’s current waiting period stands at 2-4 months depending on the location and variant. Interestingly, the top-end 2.8L automatic emerged as the most popular variant.

The Innova Crysta which is based on the second generation IMV (International Multipurpose Vehicle) platform is powered by the 154 PS 2.4-litre diesel and 177 PS 2.8-litre diesel engines. The former is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission while the latter is available exclusively with a 6-speed AT. Toyota is also gearing up to introduce a new 2.7-litre petrol variant in India later this year.

The Toyota Innova Crysta doesn’t really have a direct rival in that price segment. The premium products, especially SUVs, that are priced in the INR 15-20 lakhs bracket are the perceived rivals. The latest Toyota ranges between INR 13.83 lakhs to INR 20.77 lakhs (ex-showroom, Mumbai).
