Mahindra has confirmed that the all-new (G4) SsangYong Rexton will be launched in India in the second half of 2018. The company was studying the launch prospects of the SUV in India and now has got the go-ahead but costs will be a major challenge for the UV maker.
To keep costs in check, the Rexton will be locally assembled in India but parts like powertrain and body panels will be imported from Korean suppliers. Mahindra plans to weld the body in-house and paint it too.
The Rexton is powered by a 2.2-litre diesel engine that produces 187 HP of power and 420 Nm of torque. The SUV will primarily rival the Toyota Fortuner, Ford Endeavour and the upcoming Mitsubishi Pajero Sport.
The XUV maker intends to price the Rexton at around Rs 3-4 lakh cheaper than the Toyota Fortuner. Prices for the Fortuner start at Rs. 27.27 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) currently, so expect Mahindra to price the Rexton at around Rs 23-25 lakh (ex-showroom).
However, it still isn’t confirmed whether the Rexton will be badged a Mahindra or a SsangYong. But the officials at Mahindra indicate that this SUV is most likely to be badged a Mahindra. This will be the flagship SUV for Mahindra once it is launched.
