Ramagopal Varma’s Ice Cream To Cost 2,11,832 Only. The director known for his blunt style, had conversations with the movie actors, technicians, equipment suppliers, etc and grilled them
Director Ram Gopal Varma who is renowned for his eccentric work is attracting attention with yet another experiment of minuscule budget which is set to change the economy of film industry. After celebrating the success meet of movie ‘Ice cream’, the experimental director disclosed the cost involved in making the movie accounts to only Rs.2, 11,832. RGV emphasizes that the film industry economics depends on the content of the film that will grab the attention of the audience. He candidly said that, there are huge budget films which were flop because viewers were bored of the content.
The director known for his blunt style, had conversations with the movie actors, technicians, equipment suppliers, etc and grilled them, if they were working just for the payment available or did they like the concept and had faith in the fate of the movie. He cleared the air even before starting the shooting by proclaiming that payment will be done based on the movies collections at box office and not from the cost of production. Thus he decentralized the cost and not rubbing the failure of the film on the producer and distributors alone.
Known for making films at fast pace, RGV used no orthodox equipment and cherry-picked not to have any commercial elements like songs and comedy. The unit has used no other equipment apart from the Gimbal rig for flow-cam technology. “Making use of the flow-cam technology, we were able to reduce 90 per cent of manpower. There were no other cameras, cranes, Jimmy jibs, special lights used for the picture. It is just editing and printing the final with remixed sound as rest all was digital” RGV articulated.
Major chunk of the budget was spent on rent of the one location, where the entire film was shot and some amount on refreshments. The lead actors Navdeep and Tejaswi were the costume designers for themselves. Branded for his sensational statements concerning his films, RGV claimed that in this horror flick, lead actress Tejaswi had a nude scene. A film buff during his youth claims that – “The Only reason for the good openings is the way they promoted the movie”. The director adds that “If one thoroughly understands the trick behind making of ‘Ice Cream’ the current structure of the Film industry would collapse and give rise to a new one.”
The likelihood of this technology to work for all films is low, but is definitely a technology which filmmakers have to embrace. However, the director is all set for a sequel of ‘Ice cream’.
