One generally doesn’t associate filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma with a romantic drama. But his latest flick ‘365 Days’, starring Nandoo and Anaika Soti, falls under the genre. The filmmaker, for long, was keen on attempting such a subject – which centres around a young couple who rush into marriage only to realise that their expectations don't match.

“Ever since I got married I wanted to make a film which traces the relationship of newlyweds. The screenplay was penned keeping in mind the emotions of a young couple and looking at every facet of marriage from very close quarters,” he insists.

Recounting his personal experience, Varma, who had a failed marriage with Ratna, recalls, “When my wife was about to leave me, I thought she was taking a wrong decision. But down the lane I realised otherwise.

I was a selfish person and I still am. My objective at that point of time was only to get that one big break in films. She obviously expected some of my time and wanted me to do things she likes whereas I felt she was stopping my career.

However, I couldn’t think from her viewpoint since I was completely immersed in the making of ‘Shiva’. Only after she left me did I realised that she was right. “And I’ve come across many such happenings from the people I know. ‘365 Days’ is a blend of such incidents.”

Explaining why he titled the film as ‘365 Days’, he states, “For a married couple, the real life starts only after they complete a year of marriage. Once you cross that period, the real person in you comes out and the differences will begin to surface.”

Varma confides his daughter Revathi – who tied the knot nearly a couple of years ago – gave inputs for the film. “She’s a traditional girl and has been in love for many years before tying the knot. After coming up with the script I gave a draft to her. She gave her tips.

“I have a particular view about relationships and she told me that not everyone’s views are the same. I had to slightly alter the climax following her observations. There’s a dialogue, ‘Pelli ane vyavasthalone edho tappundi (There’s something wrong in the institution of marriage).’ She insisted it be a viewpoint rather than a statement.”
