‘Pan’ is the story of the boy who could fly but never grew up and his search for his mother. Enter Neverland, laden with deep mines, high mountains and weird flying creatures but the story never really takes off. Should Hollywood have attempted retelling this children’s story at all? It begins promisingly with the establishing shots and the entry of little Peter Pan (Levi Miller) in a boarding school supervised by cunning, greedy nuns.

Hugh Jackman and Levi Miller

Cut to Neverland where Blackbeard (Hugh Jackman), the villain, is out to nab the little boy for reasons best known to himself but the boy endears himself to Captain Hook (Garrett Hedlund), Tiger Lily (Rooney Mara) and Mary (Amanda Seyfried), among others. An apology of a screenplay by Jason Fuchs is a clear no-no.

Director Joe Wright too hardly makes his presence felt and the narrative lacks any cumulative build up. True, the artistes do a fair job except for Hugh Jackman who is far too stiff for words apart from being unrecognisable. As for the story, it drags on monotonously. And though it is only 111 minutes it seems much, much longer. Poor JM Barrie must be turning in his grave.
