One of the most bankable directors in Tollywood, Puri Jagannadh, of late, hasn’t had a hit that befits his repute. “’Temper’ banae adindhandi (Temper performed well). My team was happy about it. Every film will not run the way we want it to be, it’s a reality. Once the result is out, you need be sad about it,” he begged to differ.

It is the same mindset that led him to move on—despite the crash of his June release ‘Jyothi Lakshmi’. “It might not have raked in the moolah at the BO but was labeled as a good film by many women. In fact a lady is penning on book on it.”

Presently, the hotshot director is awaiting the release of ‘Loafer’, which stars Varun Tej and Disha Patani. An actioner, it unfolds as an emotional drama between a son (Varun) and his mother (Revathi). “The mother wishes that his son, who is taken away by his father, is not raised as a loafer but the father raises him as one. Irrespective of the title, it talks about good as it comes to an end,” he shares.

Varun Tej, Puri says, blew him away. “I’ve met Chiranjeevi garu recently with some footage and he was impressed with the way Varun emoted in an emotional number that also involves Revathi. I watched the film on Friday and felt like ‘veedu star ayyadra’ (he has become a star).

“On the sets, Varun behaves the character and is not influenced by factors around him. He doesn’t go overboard with emotions by an inch; he keeps it simple. Another factor that can work in his favour is that he has an innocent face,” Puri says with a laugh.

Admittedly, it was difficult to get Revathi, who is picky with the characters she plays, on board. “Initially she didn’t agree to be a part of the film, saying that commercial films are not in her zone. But I narrated the script on phone and convinced her. While performing some scenes, she said, ‘I haven’t done such scenes till now in my career and I’m doing the film trusting you.’”

Puri, not long ago, was in the news for the hostile criticism that he received from ‘mega’ fans— after making a statement that Chiranjeevi didn’t tell him that he didn’t like the second half of the 150th project (Puri was the writer of the project that was eventually called off). “I was honest and just expressed that Chiranjeevi garu didn’t tell me, that’s it. I’ve met him later and had a word about what I briefed to the media. But I will do a film with him for sure.”

Didn’t he felt that the matinee icon’s fans were too insensitive on him? “They react to everything. They are not aware of the friendship that I share with Chiru garu,” he responds.

A few days back, Puri came in clash with fans of Pawan Kalyan at the music launch of ‘Loafer’. The do went amidst continuous chants of power star, interrupting Prabhas (who was the chief guest), from speaking. The director feels its high time Pawan Kalyan steps in and addresses the issue at the earliest. “Not just me, everyone gets irritated when you are not allowed to speak. Fans seemed to have gone beyond control. Mr Pawan Kalyan should have a word with them; else, he will get a bad name because of their adrenaline rush. He should tell them, ‘Arey Ila arichi naa paruvu thiyakandira’ (Don’t scream and spoil my reputation).”

Puri’s relationship with Charrmee has been the talk of the town for the past many months but he avers that controversies will never affect his work. “If you are not courting controversies then you are doing nothing. If you are working, you will be written about. I take controversies with a pinch of salt,” he declares.

While he has already commenced his next, ‘Rogue’, Puri has put his plans of nurturing young talent on the backburner for a while. “Industry is going through a lean phase for the past one year. Small films are not getting a fancy price on satellite and so, we’ve decided to wait.”

What about his long-pending project with good friend Mahesh Babu? Is it happening? “The script is being readied. It will be mounted on a huge canvas and there are chances for an international actor to play a key role in it,” he signs off.
