With new age actresses Samantha, Tamannaah and Tapsee taking up author-backed roles, the divas invariably trigger interest around fading female-centric movies in T-town. With Samantha playing a ghost in ‘Raju Gari Gadhi 2’ and Tapsee pulling off a horror comedy ‘Anando Brahma’ just recently, now it is turn of their colleague Tamannaah Bhatia to essay an author-backed role in Telugu remake of B-town film ‘Queen’.
“I am very excited about the film. I feel happy that I am going to give it my perspective and it will be how I think or perceive of the film so I am really looking forward to it,” said Tamannaah about her maiden author-backed role. Earlier, another pretty actress Tapsee helped her maiden female-centric film ‘Anando Brahma’ to break-even with her ghost act and revived the fortunes of women-oriented movies.
“Only top league actresses can come to the rescue of female-centric movies any given day,’ says director Chandra Siddharth who feels that A-listers like Tapsee, Tamannaah and Samantha will raise the bar on the genre “Stars with their brand value will be able to trigger hype around the film and subsequently pull in crowds on the strength of their names. As you can’t make a female-centric with a newcomer, top actresses remain the best bet for this genre,” he adds.
After disastrous show from gorgeous Charmme to Trisha and Anjali to Swathi who almost sounded death knell for the genre, filmmakers were reluctant to touch those films with a barge pole. “Box office success is determined by novel content, whether it is hero and heroine-driven film, it doesn’t matter,” says director Neelakanta who is returning to limelight with Telugu remake of Hindi film ‘Queen’.
“Tamannaah fits the bill and she is apt to reprise the role of Kangana Ranaut. She is spirited and natural actress and bound to breath life into an author-backed role. Of course, her name triggers lot of hype,” he reasons. Summing up the trend, director Meher Ramesh says ‘Every actress likes to do a performance-oriented role, but they seldom get it. Once they grab it, they should go all out and prove that they are talented and crowd pullers too.”
