Palamur records highest MMR, IMR
The Mahbubnagar has recorded highest mother mortality rate (MMR) and infant mortality rate (IMR). The MMR and IMR indicate number of deaths per 1000 live births. The district administration has been jolted into action following 132 cases coming to light recently.

The regions of Narayanpet and Utkoor mandals along with the Thandas with Scheduled Tribes populations have been identified as vulnerable areas in the district. Currently, the district is regarded as the ‘high priority district’ in India as it has the highest number of MMR at 160 per every 1,000 live births and IMR at 56 per every 1,000 live births. They are higher than the the State average of 134 and 46 MMR and IMR.
According to District Collector Ronald Rose, the main reason for high rate of MMR and IMR is due to lack of awareness among the rural population on the availability of healthcare facilities. “There is a need to launch an awareness campaign, particularly in the tribal areas.”
While talking to the representatives of Nice Foundation, an NGO, that has volunteered to conduct a comprehensive survey to identify the cause for high MMR and IMR, the Collector asked them to utilise the well-established network of ANMs and Anganwadi workers in rural villages to find out the status of the healthcare facilities available and the number of people availing these facilities.
“As the MMR and IMR indicate the true human development index, we are planning to conduct a detailed survey in the district to find out the ground realities. We have sought the support of the district administration in this regard and soon we will come out with facts based on which the government can take appropriate steps to eradicate the same,” said Dr Padmanabha Reddy, CEO of Nice foundation.
According to healthcare experts in the district, the main reason for high infant deaths is due to a several factors, including poor sanitation, inadequate nutrition as well as mothers not willing to seek medical advice. Largest number of highways passes through the district.
As result of which largest migration population land, including the crew working on transport vehicles, land in the district. High incidence of deaths due to spurious liquor, too are reported. At present, the State and Central governments have set a target of cutting down IMR to less than 29 per1000 live births. But the target has not so far attained.
