A divorcee who was injured in an acid attack on Friday night, succumbed to burns at the Government General Hospital (GGH) here on Saturday morning. According to police, Prathipati Rani, 40, of Telaprolu village in the district, was returning home on a two-wheeler driven by her friend Katari Rajesh, an automobile worker, when two assailants attacked them with acid at Gudavalli at around 10 pm on Friday.

Vijayawada: A divorcee who was injured in an acid attack on Friday night, succumbed to burns at the Government General Hospital (GGH) here on Saturday morning. According to police, Prathipati Rani, 40, of Telaprolu village in the district, was returning home on a two-wheeler driven by her friend Katari Rajesh, an automobile worker, when two assailants attacked them with acid at Gudavalli at around 10 pm on Friday.


Rani, who suffered burns in the acid attack, sustained severe head injuries when she fell down from the two-wheeler during the attack. Rajesh also suffered burns on his shoulders in the incident. Rani, who was rushed to the GGH, slipped into coma and later succumbed.


She is survived by three-year-old daughter Madhushalini. The sight of Madhushalini and her grandmother Mariyamma sobbing inconsolably moved onlookers at the GGH. Gannavaram police, who registered a case, took two persons into custody in connection with the acid attack. One of the accused was said to be Rani’s former husband.
