138 imprisoned for drunken driving

Hyderabad: The third and fourth Metropolitan Magistrate Courts at Erramanzil, on Friday, imprisoned 138 motorists, out of 440, who were caught while drunken driving and imposed a penalty of Rs 2,000 each. Additional Commissioner (Traffic) Jitender said the motorists were caught by the traffic police during the drunken driving enforcement at 25 police stations’ limits from December 9 to 17 in the city.

As many as 352 bikers, 19 auto-drivers, 64 car-drivers and five others were caught during the enforcement drive. They were produced in the concerned courts on Friday, which imprisoned two persons for a period of 10 days, three for seven days, four for five days, eight for three days, 15 for two days, 20 for a period of one day and 80 were imprisoned till the rising of the court, Jitender said. Further, he said since January this year, 15,332 drunken drivers were caught by the traffic police, out of which 2,940 have been imprisoned by the courts.
