Eluru: A 45-year-old man attempted suicide by consuming pesticide in front of Sub Inspector at Pentapadu Police station on Friday. Tadepalligudem rural CI G Madhubabu said that Uttareena Simhachalam (45) of Krovvidi village in Nidamarru mandal came to Pentapadu police station for an inquiry in a dowry harassment case this morning.
Suddenly, he consumed pesticide in front of SI Gurraya in the station and fell unconscious. The police immediately rushed him to Tadepalligudem government hospital. The CI said that Simhachalam has a daughter Meena Sirisha and got her married to Attada Mutyam of Parimalla village three years ago.
After one year, Meena Sireesha returned to her parents’ house for delivery. After delivery, her husband Mutyam did not come to see the baby suspecting her fidelity, which resulted in quarrels between the couple. In 2014, she wrote a letter to her husband seeking an apology. But two months back, when Mutyam attended a relative’s marriage in his village and Sirisha staged the dharna at the marriage. Women associations supported her agitation. But when Mutyam showed the letter to the women leaders, which stated that she has committed a mistake, and asked for an apology, women associations withdrew their support. Later, she demanded Mutyam to give her share of property. As the clashes reached their peak, Sirisha filed 498A IPC case against her husband and six others. Pentapadu police issued notices to the husband and he used to attend court proceedings. However, police did not take any action against the remaining six people.
Sirisha’s father Simhachalam on Friday went to Pentapadu police station and asked them why they did not arrest the other accused in the case. As SI Gurrayya did not respond properly, Simhachalam consumed the pesticide and fell unconscious. The victim’s daughter Sirisha alleged that the police were harassing them as they complained to the SP. She alleged that her husband has been demanding a divorce or additional dowry of Rs 2 lakhs. Even after three months, no action was taken by police, she alleged.
