​Hyderabad: The Chairman of an engineering college in the city has been arrested by East Cyberabad police for his role in the fee reimbursement scam.

The accused, Vasanth Tharun Kumar (45), Chairman of Hasvita Institute of Engineering and Technology, Keesara, was arrested on August 8. On June 20th this year, Guguloth Anitha (27), a student of Hasvita engineering college, lodged a complaint with the Keesara police station.

She stated in her complaint that she took admission at Hasvita Institute of Engineering and Technology through web counseling for M Tech programme for the year 2013-15. But, when she went to pay her first semester exam fees, she was not allowed and was demanded Rs 5,000 as development fees.

She took her original certificates and the management retained her Transfer Certificate, Caste and Income Certificates. Though, she did not study first year and second year of engineering at the college, the management claimed fee reimbursement from the government.

The management of the college applied for second year fee reimbursement without her consent by providing her first year marks memo, affidavit, Aadhaar card and other documents which were not handed over by her and were indeed fabricated and uploaded on the website for sanction of reimbursement of fees to the district tribal welfare officer (DTWO),

Rangareddy district, without taking the thumb impression of the candidate and en-cashed an amount of Rs 57,000 for the second year. After knowing the fact and upon questioning by Anitha, the management remitted the same to DTWO through a challan.
