Hyderabad: The Jubilee Hills police on Monday arrested an alleged imposter on charge of trying to cheat some legislators by posing as Secretary in the Finance Department. The alleged imposter was identified as Balaji of Tenali town in Guntur district.

According to the police, Balaji had introduced himself as Devara Kumar, Secretary in Finance Department. He told them that the Union government had allocated huge amount of funds under the Prime Minister's Employment Guarantee Scheme and he would do the needful to release maximum amount of funds if he was given some percentage.

Balaji rang up the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) working president and MLA Revanth Reddy and tried to entrap him. Suspecting that somebody was fishy, the legislator reported the matter to the police. Based on the information, police first arrested Balaji's associate Ankush on Sunday evening. Later, the police laid a trap through Ankush and caught Balaji at Alair on Monday.

Police said Balaji was earlier arrested by the Central Crime Station on similar charges in 2013. Several cases were registered against him in the States of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. He was charged with cases of cheating during the time when N Kiran Kumar Reddy was the Chief Minister.
