Guntur: Five pilgrims including two women were killed on the spot and seven others were injured when they were knocked down by a speeding lorry on the highway in Palayamkottai of Tirunelveli district in Tamil Nadu in the early hours on Saturday.

The pilgrims from Guntur district went to Tamil Nadu to take part in Cauvery Pushkaralu.According to revenue officials, as many as 47 pilgrims went to Tamil Nadu to take part in Cauvery Pushkaralu by Balaji Travels bus from Tenali on September 13.

While the bus was proceeding from Rameswaram to Kanyakumari the bus stopped on the NH near Palayamkottai in Tiruneveli district in Tamil Nadu.

After attending the nature’s call, they stood on the NH, when a speeding lorry hit them from behind in the wee hours on Saturday.

The deceased were identified as Desa Venkata Rama Rao (68) (Eepur), Kanneganti Ramaiah (65) (Eepur), Godavarthi Naga Vardhini (43)(Anantavaram village), K Ratna Manikyam (60) (Tenali) and Satyam (55) Tenali.

Another seven persons who were injured in the mishap were undergoing treatment in the Tiruneveli hospital.Post-mortem will be performed to the bodies of the deceased in the same hospital. While Venkata Rama Rao was doing kirana business, Kanneganti Ramaiah was pursuing agriculture in Eepur. Satyam was a cook in Tenali.

Following instructions of the government, Guntur District Collector Kona Sasidhar spoke to officials in Tirunalveli and requested them to make necessary arrangements to give treatment to those who were injured in the accident. He requested them to send the bodies of the deceased to Guntur district.

He sent Kollur tashildar Annaravarapu Seshagiri Rao and Sub-Inspector Ashok Kumar to bring the bodies to Guntur. They went to Tamil Nadu by flight.

Speaking to The Hans India, Seshagiri Rao said “We will bring the bodies of the deceased by Sunday night. Post-mortem will be performed to the deceased in the Tiruneveli hospital. Those injured in the accident are undergoing treatment in the same hospital”.
