Central Varsity Status For AU? Plans are afoot to upgrade Andhra University (AU) a central university this year and if that becomes a reality, the admissions will be held from the next academic year.
Andhra State CM Chandrababu Naidu to talk with Central Govt.
Visakhapatnam: Plans are afoot to upgrade Andhra University (AU) a central university this year and if that becomes a reality, the admissions will be held from the next academic year.
Announcing this at a media conference here on Thursday, AU Vice-Chancellor (VC) GSN Raju said that he met Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu in Hyderabad on Wednesday and presented him the credentials of AU which is among the top ten universities in the country and number one in the Andhra Pradesh State. ‘India Today’ recently ranked AU number 10 in the country. Andhra University College of Engineering is ranked 27th in India and number one in Andhra Pradesh, he pointed out.
The Chief Minister had assured me that he would talk to the Central Government and get AU upgraded to central university, Raju disclosed.
“We are confident that it will be done since it was Naidu who wrote to the then Prime Minister AB Vajpayee 10 years ago seeking central varsity status for AU,” he said.
The advantage of the 85-year old varsity is that it has the land, infrastructure and it maintains high standards. “To set up a new central university, you need Rs.10, 000 crore and 500 acres of land. Even if it is sanctioned, as was the case in Orissa, the buildings could not be completed in five years. We have everything in place and upgradation will give us tremendous boost to reach new heights,” Raju stated.
“Once AU gets central varsity status, there would be no dearth of funds and the present resource crunch would be overcome. The strength of the faculty would increase from the present 450 to 1200 and the research and development, infrastructure and other wings could be strengthened. New courses could be introduced and it could take up hundreds of projects and also consultancy work,” he shared.
Institute of skill-development
Prof. Raju also revealed that an insitute of skill-development would be set up to develop the skills of students in all trades, including IT.
The VC also said he spoke to Naidu on the issue payment of arrears. Pension arrears of Rs.93 crore would be sanctioned within a few days, he said.
