Ahead of UN Day, marked annually on 24 October, the United Nations announced today that around 200 iconic monuments, buildings, museums, bridges and other landmarks in nearly 60 countries around the world will be lit up blue – the official colour of the Organization – as part of a global campaign to commemorate its 70th anniversary.
This is an initiative led by the [UN Department of Public Information] and has had tremendous support from governments, cities, mayors, and locally in many countries [from] information centres, to ensure this collaborative public awareness of the UN Day. UN Day marks the anniversary of the entry into force in 1945 of the UN Charter.
With the ratification of this founding document by the majority of its signatories, including the five permanent members of the Security Council, the United Nations officially came into being. United Nations Day is part of United Nations Week, which runs from 20 to 26 October. The day is dedicated to making known to the peoples of the world the aims and achievements of the United Nations and to gaining their support for" its work.
In 1971 the United Nations General Assembly adopted a further resolution (United Nations Resolution 2782) declaring that United Nations Day shall be an international holiday and recommended that it should be observed as a public holiday by all United Nations member states.[2 24 October has been celebrated as United Nations Day since 1948. In 1971, the United Nations General Assembly recommended that the day be observed by Member States as a public holiday.
Several international schools throughout the world also celebrate the diversity of their student body on United Nations Day (although the event is not necessarily celebrated on 24 October). The UN's World Development Information Day has also been held on 24 October since 1972. The objective is to draw the attention of world public opinion each year to development problems and the necessity of strengthening international co-operation to solve them.
The Government of India directs that the UN flag will be flown along with the National Flag on all buildings on which the Indian National Flag is regularly flown on 24th October to mark the United Nations Day. The UN Flag is, however, not flown on Rashtrapati Bhawan, Vice-President’s House, Parliament House and Supreme Court building.
