As part of Carnatic music programmes for the month of June, Kalasagaram arranged two grand musical nights at Keys Girls High School. The first was a vocal concert of talented youngster Vani Ramamurthi and the second was about Vidushi Emani Lalitha Krishna’s scintillating instrumental performance of Gotu Vadyam (Chitra Veena) that attracted the connoisseurs.
Emani Lalitha Krishna is the only Carnatic instrumental musician par excellence who is versatile in three instruments Veena, Gotu Vadyam (Chitra Veena) and Mandolin. She is ‘A’ grade artist of Veena and Chitra Veena. She performed in almost all the important cities of Andhra and Tamil Nadu and participated many a time in Sadguru Thyagaraja Arandhanotsavalu in Tiruvayyaru.
She started her concert with Ghana Navaragamalika Varnam ‘Intha Kopamela’ with an initial splendid display on the strings. She briskly moved on to ‘Thulaseedalamulachey’ (Mayamalavagoula) of Thyagaraja before taking up ‘Jananee Ninu Vinaa’ (Reethigoula) of Subbaraya Sastri. ‘Brovabharamaa’ (Bahudari) of Thyagaraja was executed quickly in a decorative spell.
She picked up a rare Sucharitra raga krithi ‘Velumayilume’ of Koteswara Ayyer and executed it gently and appealingly. This was followed up by ‘Rave Himagiri kumaree’ of Syama Sastri in Raga Thodi. Lalitha Krishna gave a lucid ragalapana, bringing melody in swarakalpana much to the delight of music lovers.
As concluding items, she chose a Javali ‘Vega Neevu’ of Poochi Srinivasa Ayyengar and finally with a Ragalmalika before dwelling ‘Brahma Kadigina Padamu’ (Mukhari) of Annamacharya. Radhika Srinivasan (Voilin), Young mridangist Vankayala Kalyan Abhijith (Mridangam) and Young Shanthi Kaladhar (Kanjira) gave good instrumental support.
All in all Vidushi Lalitha Krishna showed maturity in her style of performance and it proved to be an impeccable display on Gotu Vadyam which is being pursued only by few in the country.
Delightful concert
Vani was the other performer who was born and brought up in the United States and had been training from Padma Kutty and others in the US. She later moved to Chennai to due to passion for singing in 2011 and since then has been under the tutelage of Ranjani and Gayathri.
An ‘A’ Grade Artist of AIR, Vani Ramamurthi won many prizes and bagged prestigious awards from Sri Krishna Gana Sabha of Chennai. Vani started her concert with ‘Era Naa Pai’ (Todi) raga varnam which was relished by the audience. She then moved on to ‘Sri Saraswathi Namostuthe’ (Arabhi) of Muthuswamy Deekshitulu and followed it up with ‘Kanta Joodumee’ (Vachaspathi) of Thyagaraja.
She made a decorative spell on the strings putting forth emotive feeling of the works of Thyagaraja. Dealing with ‘Mari Vairi Ramani’ (Nasikabhooshini) of Thyagaraja, she took Syama Sastri krithi ‘Durusuga Krupajoochi’ (Saveri) and dealt this item reasonably good with her chaste voice. Vani gave swarakalpana befittingly. Tani Avarthanam by senior Mridanga Vidwan Kapa Srinivasa Rao proved to be a wonderful watch while B Janardan on Ghatam supported the artist.
