The grand plans of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) to set up model markets have hit a road block due to court cases.
The GHMC had planned to construct as many as 18 model markets out of 50 in phase each costing about Rs 65 lakh. The civic body has initiated model markets construction works at Malkajgiri and Lalapet.
However, both of them have been facing legal glitches; model market at Defence Colony in Malkajgiri was constructed in place, which has been allocated to build a public park.
The Supreme Court guideline says that the municipal corporation is not allowed to construct model markets in the areas where the land was allocated for play grounds and public parks.
Claiming it the residents in the area bought a stay order from the High Court. TDP leader Radhakrishna Yadav claiming the ownership of Lalapet model market land has filed a case against the GHMC.
However, the court did not issue any stay order to halt the works. When contacted, the GHMC officials told The Hans India that the Corporation after finishing works worth Rs 10 lakh at Malkajgiri received a stay order from court to stop the ongoing construction work.
“Despite the court case the civic body has been continuing works at Lalapet, since we have not received any stay order to stop the works,” the official said.
The residents in the respected areas felt that the GHMC is going ahead without proper homework in view of municipal elections.
“How can the civic body build the model market in the land, which has been allocated for the public park?” questioned Sandhya, resident of Defence Colony. “The GHMC has been playing with the public money without conducting proper study,” she added.
However, the GHMC is also planning to construct model markets at Saroorornagar (HUDA complex), Vanasthalipuram, Gaddiannaram, Saroornagar and Hayathnagar in Circle 8; Nalgonda X Roads, Charminar, Saidabad in Circle 4 of South Zone and Shanthinagar in Circle 13; Rakshapuram, Midhani Bus Stop, Barkas,
