Renowned comedian, Raju Shrivastav will perform live for a charity event organised by the Good Bye Leprosy Trust (GBLT) at Sri Sathya Sai Nigamagamam on Sunday.

The event, ‘Raju Hazir Ho’ is organised as part of the leprosy awareness initiative of the NGO and to eradicate the social stigma and discrimination associated with it.

Announcing about the event on Tuesday, Major General NB Patel (retd) director of public relations of GBLT said, “Our aim is to reduce the discrimination against people affected by leprosy through communication and assure their physical, social and psychological well-being.

The cure for leprosy was discovered only in 1940; prior to this all leprosy patients suffered deformities in absence of medication. Now there is 100 per cent cure for it. This is an air-borne disease and there is no vaccination for prevention. Early symptoms are trouble-free and hence awareness in detection is very crucial.”

According to a report, 58.85 per cent of new leprosy cases in the world are in India. 1.26 lakh new cases of leprosy were reported in India during 2014-15 of which there were 11,365 children and 46,379 women.
