Hyderabad: A city-based man associated with the notorious Lashkar-e-Toeba (LeT) and other extremist groups, who was accused of attempting to cause explosions in Hyderabad during 2001 Ganesh festival, has been arrested by the Hyderabad police in Lucknow on Wednesday.

Abdul Aziz, one of the most wanted terror operatives, was deported from Saudi Arabia after undergoing an eight-year jail term on charges of possessing fake passport and arrived at Lucknow in a flight from Jeddah on Wednesday.

A non-bailable warrant has been pending against him in a case being investigated by the Hyderabad Special Investigation Team. Abdul Aziz is accused of conspiring to plant bombs at various places in Hyderabad.

Abdul Aziz alias Gidda was arrested by the Hyderabad police in 2001 for possessing a fake passport with the name ‘Abdul Kareem’, a Belgium made pistol and some Jihadi material.

He later fled to Saudi Arabia using a fake passport. He was caught by the police there with fake passport in 2007 and since then he was serving life term in prison.

Aziz, who was born in Hyderabad to a police constable, was a follower of Azam Ghori, leader of Indian Muslim Mohammedi Mujahideen (IMMM) who was killed in an encounter in 2000 at Jagityal in Karimnagar, a senior police officer said.

He discontinued studies from a college at Mallepally in Hyderabad and worked as an electrician, just before he was trapped into Jihadist ideology. He came under the police radar when he cut his teeth in an anti-prostitution campaign in Hyderabad.

The officer said that Aziz went to Saudi Arabia in early 90s to work as an electrician. Later, he fled to Bosnia and secured a fake passport there. He was fighting Serbian forces in Bosnia. He also participated in Bosnia-Chechnya war in 1994.

Aziz had reportedly provided logistics to the jihadists in Bosnia, was trained in handling AK-47s, assault rifles, rocket launchers, mortars and also in the preparation of anti-personnel mines and improvised explosive devices (IEDs), the Hyderabad police had said when he was arrested in 2001.

Additional Commissioner (Crimes and SIT) Swati Lakra told The Hans India, “He (Aziz) is already arrested by the Hyderabad police in Lucknow. Our teams are bringing him on a transit warrant.

Answering a query, the Additional Commissioner said Aziz would be taken into custody for investigation as a non-bailable warrant is pending against him in a case registered by the SIT.
