Principal Secretary of Health and Finance on Wednesday held a review meeting. He also invited the media persons and sought the cooperation of the media in curbing the practice.
The meeting assumed significance in the wake of High Court directive to the State government to take the help of the media to create awareness among people on the danger posed by carbine-ripened fruits.
The State government initiated measures to check the practice by giving training to the staff in curbing the menace and counselling the traders against engaging in unethical practices and thus posing danger to the health of the people.
The officials urged the media to play a greater role, so that the consumers would be wary of artificially-ripened fruits and pick only the original ones. The officials warned traders and vendors of six months jail term and Rs 1 lakh fine if they used or sold artificially-ripened fruits.
The officials through PowerPoint presentation explained the hazards to the health by eating fruits ripened by using calcium carbide. The officials said the State government would take a stern action against the businessmen or traders who indulged in shady activities.
Ethylene chamber built at a cost of Rs 60 lakh at Gaddiannaram fruit market would be operational by March-end and six more chambers would come up in private sector. Agriculture Department would set up green chambers to check the problem, the officials said.
Out of 203 samples tested, as many as 75 were found being ripened by using carbide. As many as 493 traders took part in the meeting in which the officials counselled them to stop unhealthy practices.
