The University of Hyderabad (UoH) celebrated the 70th Independence Day with Prof P Appa Rao, Vice- Chancellor, unfurling the national flag at Gurbakhsh Singh Maidan on Monday. The celebration was well attended by all sections of the University fraternity and a few guests from outside.
On the occasion, Prof. Rao congratulated everybody and said, “In 70 years we have achieved little, and a lot more needs to be done for us to be the proud citizens of the nation.
On a day like this, let us set priorities the way to move forward.” Prof. Rao said, “As a University, we have reasons to be happy that we have several feathers in our cap in the 40 years of our existence. Undoubtedly, we have emerged as a neighbours’ envy and owners’ pride on many fronts.”
“I wish to introduce a programme that could be regarded as Social Responsibility of Individuals (SRI) from UoH. I talk of SRI because some students approach Dean, Students’ Welfare, and the Vice-Chancellor for financial support with genuine requirements. There is no provision in the budget for such support to the needy students.
“The University has been using an arbitrary approach to help very few students. It would be better if we build and nurture a proper fund and a well-designed mechanism to help more such deserving students to the extent possible,” he added.
Another proposal from Prof. Rao was to establish a ‘Students’ Aid Fund’ in the name of the founder Vice-Chancellor, Professor Gurbaksh Singh, and call it as GBSSAF. The funds for this scheme will be mobilised from teachers, non-teaching staff, students, alumni, philanthropists and anyone who would like to financially help the students.
Prof. Rao announced to contribute Rs 5,000 from his salary every month towards GBSSAF under SRI from his side. Some delightful and motivating cultural events including few group songs and dance performances based on social harmony and national integrity were performed by the students of Kendriya Vidyalaya UoH Campus Students and University student.
