The Bhagyanagar Ganesh Utsav Samithi has decided not to follow police diktat of restricting heights of Ganesh idols this festival and declared that it is going ahead with its plans of immersion of statues at Hussain Sagar Lake.

Addressing a press conference on Monday, the Samithi’s General Secretary, Bhagavanth Rao said that the court has not put any restrictions on the height of Ganesh idols, and left it up to the organisers.

“Celebrating a festival is my fundamental right as per the Constitution and no one can impose restrictions on me. The police have no right to interfere in religious matters,” said Rao.

He appealed to the people for immersion of statues at one place. Bhagavanth Rao asked the local officers not to pressurise the organisers for electricity charges and requested the State government for free power supply.

"We will not seek permission from officials to have pandals. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation is not the owner of roads. Why should we take permission from them?” he asked.

“A review meeting is taken up by the Chief Secretary every year, but this year no such meet has been organized till now,” informed the General Secretary. He also demanded that the GHMC repair roads before Ganesh immersion.
