Karimnagar: The quiet neighbourhoods of Jyothy Nagar in the City woke up to a commotion on Tuesday when the sanitation workers collecting the garbage in an open place in front of a school stumbled upon two hand grenades believed to be live.

The incident comes in as a huge surprise for the denizens especially against the backdrop that recent cordon and search operations being conducted by the police led by the Police Commissioner VB Kamalasan Reddy to catch the anti-social elements off-guard.

But for a few sporadic instances that later found out to be hoax, the city hasn’t seen any major incident after that tiffin bomb blast occurred in the RTC Bus Station here on August 9, 2005 injuring more than 20 commuters and damaging three buses.

Though the police claim that the grenades are without any explosive substance, the manner in which the grenades are packed carefully suggests otherwise. It’s said that Maoists have stopped using grenades long ago.

On the other hand, the II Town Inspector K Hariprasad rushed to the spot and elicited information from the municipal workers on the spot and nearby residents.

Besides pressing a dog and bomb disposal squads into service immediately, the police also conducted a thorough search of the place. However, they didn’t find any lead.

The police registered a case and investigation is on. The City Police Commissioner VB Kamalasan Reddy inspected the seized grenades at the II Town Police Station.

Speaking to The Hans India, Hariprasad said: “There is nothing to worry as these grenades appear to be used for demo purpose. The grenades were already diffused before we found them.

As of now, we have no clue about who threw them into the trash. But we suspect that fearing cordon and search operations conducted by the police in the city, some anti-social elements might have abandoned them.”

Meanwhile, around 200 cops led by Police Commissioner conducted cordon and search operation in Housing Board Colony. The police seized a car, 20 bikes and three autorickshaws for not possessing proper documents. They also seized banned tobacco products (gutka) worth around Rs 25,000.

Kamalasan Reddy urged the people to give them information if they notice any one with suspected movements.
