Warangal: Cashing in the demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes, the GWMC has collected an amount of Rs 6.24 crores in the form of taxes from the public during November 11 to 14.

It might be noted that following the Central government’s decision to allow public to pay their taxes using the withdrawn currency, Greater Warangal Municipal Corporation (GWMC) has launched a special drive to collect the pending taxes.

Speaking to press persons along with the Corporation Taxation Officer P Shanti Kumar here on Tuesday, GWMC Mayor N Narender said there has been a good response from the public to the special drive.

He thanked the IT and Municipal Administration Minister, K Taraka Rama Rao, for requesting the Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley to permit the citizens to pay the taxes with old currency. The Minister’s initiative has helped both the GWMC and the public.

The Mayor urged the citizens to clear all their pending dues of property tax, water connection charges and others as the Centre has extended the time limit to November 24 for paying the taxes using the withdrawn currency.

He informed that of the Rs 6.24 crores, Rs 5.22 crore was property tax, Rs 91.8 lakhs was water charges and Rs 10 lakh was collected towards fines. The amount was collected from about 8,775 property assessments under the Corporation limits.

The Taxation Officer Shanti Kumar expressing pleasure over the public response to the Corporations’ special drive said on Monday a total of Rs 1.30 crores were collected by 8.30 pm.

Responding to the special drive, the owners of commercial establishments too have come forward to clear their tax dues. The chairman of SVS Group of Institutions Errabelli Tirumal Rao has paid Rs 17 lakhs property tax on Tuesday.

The Corporation has been motivating the citizens with the help of Kalajatha troupes to clear pending tax dues for the current year. The troupes were visiting colonies and villages on the outskirts of the city as part of their campaign, Shanti Kumar added.

Meanwhile, the gram panchayats and urban local bodies have also been benefitting from the provision of paying taxes with the withdrawn currency and have been collecting pending dues of taxes and non-taxes.

As per a demand, collection and balance (DCB) statement issued by the district panchayat officer, Rs 1.83 crore of pending dues were collected on Monday from 104 gram panchayats under Warangal Urban district.
