Decrease in vegetable production led to shooting up of prices

Armoor: The people, who were already suffering with severe hot conditions, were shocked at the sudden increase in the prices of vegetables. The prices of vegetables were almost doubled in a week due to low yield.

The production was low due to acute water shortage and increasing heat, which automatically led to hike in prices.

The common people were dumb struck to see chilli prices going up thrice the price of the past week. At present chilli price is Rs 80 to Rs 90 per kg.

Last week, ridge gourd price was Rs 30 to Rs 40 per kg and now the price was increased to Rs 70 and Rs 80.

Same is the case with bitter gourd and brinjal. The people have cut down the quantity of vegetable purchases.

They used to buy one or two kgs and now getting satisfied with 250 gm or 500 gm. Meanwhile, the vendors were worried at the sudden fall of purchases.

They said customers are bargaining more and lamented that they have to sit idle without customers coming to them.

At this time, leafy vegetables are a sigh of relief for farmers, vendors and customers. On the other hand, tomato prices fell due to more production.

The price of tomato is Rs 8 to Rs 10 per kg. Without buyers, a few farmers are feeding their cattle with tomatoes while others are throwing them away on roads.
