Ramakanth Thumrugoti is a name that is well known among the advertising circles in the city. This multi-faceted talent entered the art domain quite late. It wasn’t until his maiden exhibition in Japan in 2007 that he received recognition and there was no looking back after that. Seven years down the line, Ramakanth went back to Hikone City, Japan. This time he showcased his new series of paintings titled, ‘Lightness of the Living Moments’.

Ramakanth holds the distinction of being the only artist from the city who had held solo exhibitions in Singapore (2007), Lyon, France (2008), Boston MI, USA (2010), Koln, Germany (2011) and Dusseldorf, Germany (2012, 2014). The current exhibition in Japan was opened by Takashi Okubo, Mayor of Hikone City on Tuesday at a special ceremony.

Important city dignitaries including the Deputy Mayor of Hikone City Hiroko Yamane; noted philanthropist and Indophile Shimano Yosh; Miamoto Thoshihiro of Y’s Men’s Club; Michal Iwasaki, first lady of Hikone city and a number art enthusiasts attended the inauguration ceremony. The event started with a soulful rendition of the Indian national anthem by Naomi Iwasaki. The series of 29 paintings were on display at Bunka Plaza from November 11- 13.

“The paintings in this series follow contemporary, multi-layered, abstract and semi-abstract rendering. This series is the first in a 4-part series with the upcoming one in Barcelona, Spain, in the first quarter of 2015. These are in oil-on-canvas, acrylics and mixed media and they focus on human conflicts,” shared Ramakanth.

High point in Ramakanth’s career as an artist came in February 2014, when his painting titled ‘The Ecstasy of Untethered Love’, was selected by the Committee of the Children's Hope Foundation, Dubai. This painting was auctioned at a special charity event organised at Burj Al Arab, Dubai and proceeds from the auction were donated to Rashid Paediatric Center in Dubai that is helping under-privileged children from African countries.

Ramakanth shared that painting came naturally to him. “Advertising is a different life I lead. My father was an artist and for as long as I remember I used to draw. He taught me the basics of various mediums and the right use of the brush. I used to sketch very well. And even before my first show in Japan in 2007, my sketches and paintings were picked up by my friends and acquaintances who knew my work. It was my friends who had urged me into holding a show in Japan back then,” he added.
