All India Tennis Association’s (AITA) Sports Cult Championship Series Tennis Tournament began on Saturday at Surya Academy-The Global School on Miyapur - Bachupally Road. 90-year-old Raja Narasimha Rao, secretary of AP Lawn Tennis Association, who is considered the grand old man of Indian Tennis, said, “I was trained by a French coach in 1940. Getting into sports was voluntary during our days. Now you need to push kids to get into sports.”

Dr Bhakthiar Chowdary, a well known sports medicine expert, said, “Fitness Revolution has to come in the State. Sports medicine is more misunderstood than understood. There are just 14 sports medicine experts in the country. In spite of 21 years of experience, I feel that I was under-utilised.” “Speed and strength is what is required in many sports. But, unfortunately, kids these days lack these. The kids of urban cities who consume junk food are not fit enough to last long in sports. We need students from rural backgrounds to get in to sports. It is they who will earn medals for us,” Bhakthiar added.

“There are no playgrounds in schools. So we need a different approach to cultivate and develop sports culture. What the State government must do now is to introduce class room exercise programmes in order to improve the physical fitness of the students. Modified yoga in classrooms must be introduced in schools,” he said.

Bobby Reddy, founder and CEO of Sports Cult, said, “We have built 9 tennis courts so far. These nine courts have been developed at three different places in city. Sports Cult has already invested Rs 2 crore. We target to reach one lakh kids. Two per cent of these will be underprivileged kids. We have already picked up Madhu, the son of our watchman, who cannot afford tennis coaching. He is our first student. We are training him in Tennis along with other students.” The tournament will conclude on Monday.
