Hyderabad: Six persons were injured during the distribution of the famous 6,000 kg maha laddu, which was offered as prasadam to the Khairtabad Ganesh, on Friday.

Devotees thronged the venue since morning and the distribution of laddu started smoothly. However, a little later the devotees noticed that the laddu packets were being given to people who were approaching the organisers and they started rushing towards the podium.

Though the police erected barricades and deployed large number of policemen as part of bandobust at the distribution point, they could not control the public which rushed towards the podium to get the prasadam packets.

Breaking the barricades and queue lines installed by the police, the public rushed towards dais, which resulted in injuries to over six devotees.

Central Zone DCP V B Kamalasan Reddy and Saifabad ACP Surender Reddy intervened and ordered mild lathi charge to avert further damage and asked the organisers to stop the distribution of laddu. Meanwhile, city police commissioner M Mahender Reddy denied reports that appeared in a section of media of stampede during the laddu distribution.

In a clarification, the commissioner said the distribution was stopped in view of stampede-like conditions due to heavy turnout of more than 30,000 devotees at the distribution venue.

Prasadam was shifted out and packed in bags. Five vehicles were procured and the prasadam was dispatched to be distributed in all important temples of twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad.

Stating that none was hurt, the commissioner said, “Queue lines were vacated and distribution was stopped when stampede like conditions were prevailing .”

Meanwhile, Kamalasan Reddy said from next year onwards organisers would not be permitted for distribution of laddu to the public in unorganised way.

Laddu stolen
As per the practice, half of the laddu is sent back to Tapeswaram in Andhra Pradesh where it is made and brought to Hyderabad. Accordingly, it was loaded on to a truck and was despatched.

But as truck reached Abdullapurmet on the city outskirts, some unknown persons attacked the vehicle and took away some part of the laddu, and later reportedly sold it to the devotees.

On receiving information, some media professional rushed to the spot and tried to stop the illegal sale of the prasadam. However, the offenders fled from the spot.
