From homemaker to entrepreneur

What began as a hobby has turned into a lucrative profession for Radhika, a housewife hailing from Mehdipatnam. Radhika Laxma Reddy makes beautiful bangles and sells them at exhibitions, which helps in contributing a small share of money to her family.

It all started when she was making bangles for her daughter, Harshini and after mastering the art, she began her preparation on a large-scale basis. The practice eventually turned into a business idea and a shop was inaugurated on her daughter’s name ‘Harshini Colours’.

Speaking to The Hans India, Radhia shares, “It is a simple exercise. The process of bangle-making is not time consuming at all.” She uses raw materials like embroidery yarns, artificial stones, sequence for patterns and others. Embellishments like kundans, studs, mirrors, golden silk yarn, plastic bangles and other decorative items are part of her bangle-making kitty.

Her family hails her business idea and extends complete support. Soon, her bangles were a toast of her neighbourhood. In March, this year, she had her first stall at Kamma Sangham in Ameerpet. The response was encouraging and the rest is history. Currently, Radhika has had her bangle stalls at Sri Satya Sai Kalyana Mandapam in Srinagar Colony, Taj Deccan in Banjara Hills, which are regular spots for exhibitions.

Radhika uses an impressive business strategy of making fresh handmade bangles, before any exhibition commences. She takes orders from her customers and sells her exquisite creations at a reasonable rate of Rs 150 to Rs 250. Depending on the exhibition, she incorporates sophisticated styles in her bangles, which makes her display a success.

She believes that her business has been going on a good note and is aiming to extend her collection to major exhibitions, which are held at Novotel, Hitec City. “After the bangle business turns more successful, I am planning to start a boutique as well,” quips Radhika. Proving herself through artistic skills, Radhika stands as an inspiring example of a homemaker who turned into an entrepreneur.
