People’s Plaza at Necklace Road was a sight to behold on Sunday morning. As part of celebrating the Olympic victory of city-based badminton star, PV Sindhu and for raising awareness on importance of girl child, a 5K run was held at the area.

Running enthusiasts of the city had a busy weekend. From preparing for the upcoming Hyderabad Marathon to celebrating PV Sindhu’s Olympic feat and other causes walks and runs were the order of the day

People’s Plaza at Necklace Road was a sight to behold on Sunday morning. As part of celebrating the Olympic victory of city-based badminton star, PV Sindhu and for raising awareness on importance of girl child, a 5K run was held at the area.

Former professional volleyball player and the proud father of the silver-medalist, PV Ramana flagged off the walk, which was dedicated to mothers and girl child. Up to a 1,000 people came down in support of the cause including men and boys, in what can be rightly called as a remarkable display of the #HeForShe campaign.

Later, women achievers from the city that included Karate champion, Syeda Falak; first Muslim pilot from city, Syeda Salva and Table Tennis champ, Naina Jaiswal were felicitated by PV Ramana. Khairtabad MLA, Ramchander Reddy; BJP State President, K Laxman; MLC, Ramchander Rao along with Chief Organiser of the event, Nafisa Ismail were present at the run.


Strengthening national integrity

The Community Sports Development Forum organised a ‘Tiranga Run’ from Lal Bahadur Stadium to NTR Gardens at 6am on Saturday. It was an exclusive event in which sportspersons of various disciplines participated. This included Arjun awardee, Mamata Pujaari; TS Kabaddi coach, Jairam; former captain of Indian volleyball team, Naresh; Asian medalist from Artillery, Fazal Ansari and others.

The run was conducted in response to the PM’s call as a celebration of 70 years of India’s Independence. The aim was to strengthen the spirit of national integrity and commemorate the sacrifices of freedom fighters. Participating in the run, Union Minister for Labour and Employment, Bandaru Dattatreya reminded the great sacrifices of the freedom fighters and praised the efforts of sportspersons in bringing laurels to the country.

G Kishan Reddy, MLA; Chintala Ramchandra Reddy, MLA; Sridhar Reddy, Spokesperson BJP; Jagadeeshwar Yadav, TOA General Secretary; Someshwara Rao, President PET Association of Telangana; Ram Reddy, Principal GCPE; Srilatha Reddy, Asst director SAI Regional Training Centre and other official participated in the run.

Practice makes perfect

Hyderabad Runners Society organised a training run in Gachibowli on Sunday in which nearly 500 runners turned out at 5.30 am. The training run had 5K, 10K and 16K distances and was flagged off by Balakrishna, Regional Head of Reliance Trends. The event was a preparation for the main event, which will be held on August 27 from Hitex.
