Hawkers cleared from Charminar

Charminar: In a significant development as part of the Charminar Pedestrian Project (CPP), fruit sellers, pavement vendors and push carts have been pulled out from the surroundings of Charminar.

The push cart vendors have been provided the alternative space for their business at Charminar bus terminal, Sardar Mahal stretch and other places near Charminar.

The Civic authorities have been working on the CPP in a phased manner and changes have been made in the demography of ambience around Charminar. The State government wanted the structure to be developed on the lines of Istanbul, Amritsar and other global cities to preserve the historical importance of Charminar.

There was meeting with the stakeholders of fruit vendors, political leaders, with police officials and Civic officials in order to remove the push carts from its former place. The Fruit sellers have been doing their business near Charminar for quite a long time.

It is to be noted that the fruit vendors were coming in the way of traffic passing through the narrow space left after the digging activity for laying stone tiles around Charminar. The police officials have decided to meet the fruit vendors and offered them the alternative space at bus terminal.

Similarly, the space was also given at Sardar Mahal road and some vendors have been provided the space near Gulzar House. Though the vendors are not happy with the move but they are not sad for the fact that they got the alternative space near Charminar.
M A Saleem, one of the fruit sellers, said that police and municipal officials told them that alternative space was a tentative arrangement for them.

He said, “We are not happy with the move however, we cannot be adamant creating inconvenience for the people. We want our business to run but not run over by the traffic.” Traffic police has imposed diversions for the movement of vehicles near Charminar to avoid any inconvenience in completing the CPP works.
