Hyderabad: In violation of the judgment and Decree of State Wakf Tribunal that no construction work will be taken in Wakf property of Toli Mosque without following any due procedure, the Hyderabad Road Development Corporation Ltd (HRDCL) began its work of road widening of Karwan-Jiyaguda road.

After this information reached the TS Wakf Board the officials who were consulted by HRDCL immediately reacted on visited the spot on May 9 and stopped the work, but the work resumed on Thursday. Irked by the development, the Wakf activists are up in arms and decided to resist the works being undertaken over this Wakf land of about 16000 sq yds which is an attached property of Toli Mosque in Karwan.

The foundation stone for road widening was laid by the then Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy, but the GHMC’s Engineer-in-Chief in his ‘Memo of Undertaking’ assured that the works will be taken up after clearances from the Wakf Board by ‘following the required procedure’ in 2013. “On May 9, I represented the matter to the TS Wakf Board.

As per the decree, the authorities taking up development should first compensate Rs 48 crore (2013) for land acquisition of 15888.8 sq yds, which has been never paid, but the works have already started in violation of Tribunal orders and decree,” said Osman Bin Mohammed Al-Hajri, president of Deccan Wakf Properties Protection Society.

Toli Masjid was built in 1671 AD on Karwan road and 27 acres and 30 gunta of land was recorded as Wakf is under it. Its market value is said to be 600 to 1000 crore rupees. But politically influential land grabbers and unauthorised constructions came up during last two decades.

The activist who has been fighting against encroachment of the Wakf land attached to Toli Mosque for several years said that since the Board is powerless, the responsibility has fallen on the shoulders of the commoner to protect these lands.

He said that in the newly formed State promises were made to protect the Wakf lands, but those who are at the helm have undermined even the orders held by the Wakf Tribunal and the Decree. “I demand the government to stop the work immediately lest the activists start demonstrations at the spot. We shall not remain quiet and will file a contempt petition in High Court,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Chairman, TS Wakf Board, Md Saleem assured that he would be sending a team once again to the spot to ensure work is stopped. On the other hand, the Deputy Engineer, Satyanarayana who is overlooking the project did not respond to calls.
