Hyderabad: Heavy rains lashed parts of the twin cities on Sunday bringing life to a standstill. Few spells of downpour threw the traffic on the major thoroughfare out of gear. Areas like Punjagutta, Banjara Hills, Nampally, Madhapur, Tarnaka, Malkajgiri, Kushaiguda and Secunderabad had sharp showers resulting traffic jams. Water logging caused severe inconvenience to common public at many places. Charminar and other localities in the old city witnessed incessant drizzles.
Live wires have been reportedly snapped due to heavy rains causing power disruption in and around Manikonda in Ranga Reddy district. Huge trees got uprooted under the impact of heavy rains accompanied by gales in BHEL (Ramachandrapuram ) township. The rains had no dampening effect on the devotees who brought Ganesh idols in large numbers to city lakes for immersion on the day. Hundreds of idols were immersed at Hussain Sagar and Kapra lake on the day. MET officials stated that the city may receive slight rain to thunderstorms in the next 24 hours.
