Several Roman Catholic churches in the city have Our Lady's grotto. According to a legend, Marie-Bernarde Soubirous, a 14-year-old French girl, claimed to have seen the Virgin Mary in a grotto near Lourdes, France, several times. The girl discovered a fountain by digging at the spot. Later she was canonised as Saint Bernadette.
Father Valentine D'Mello said, “Smooth stones were collected from the Krishna river near Damacharla village in Nalgonda district and transported to the city to build the cave-like structure.”
“The work began in June and took six months to complete. Workers are giving final touches to the grotto before the statues of Mary and Saint Benadette are instilled,” he added.
