The Telugu Catholic Community is commemorating its 300th aniversary of the embracing of faith by the first Telugu Catholic in 1715. It was Fr Le Gac SJ, the leader of the Carnatic Mission from France, who renamed himself as Sanjeevanatha Swamy. He baptised Thumma Hanumantha Reddy of the Madigubba village of Ananthapur District, who accepted the faith and was renamed as Thumma Rayapa Reddy.

He baptised Thumma Hanumantha Reddy of the Madigubba village of Ananthapur District, who accepted the faith and was renamed as Thumma Rayapa Reddy.

From then on, the family and relatives of Thumma Rayapa Reddy accepted the Catholic faith and passed it on down the generations. “Due to various reasons and needs, these families travelled first to Nellore and Guntur and from there Telangana and other parts of the world,” informed G Bala Reddy, president of the organising committee of the celebration.

Former Lok Sabha Speaker PA Sangma, former minister Agatha Sangma, Union Labour Minister Bandaru Dattatreya, Deputy Chief Minister Rajaiah among others would take part in the celebrations. 20,000 Catholic Christians from both Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu are expected to take part in the celebrations which would today at Loyola Academy at Alwal. It is organised by Catholic Reddy Association.

All Telugu Catholic people are invited to take part in the same. The Holy Mass will be conducted at 9.45 am which would be followed by cultural programmes at 11.15 am and address by public representatives at 11.30 am. “The Catholic Reddy community has 15 lakh people in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh,” said Arogya Reddy, VP of the organising committee. This is the beginning of the celebrations and will continue till the end of the year. We will also release a history book during these celebrations.
