However, amid the ‘pall of gloom’ in political circles, there are some outside of it who are raising a toast to Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley. The decision to include Qutb Shahi Tombs in the city outskirts, as one among 25 select World Heritage sites, to be provided Central funds for revamp and restoration is reason enough for the sense of déjà vu that the save ‘heritage’ building activists are feeling since the announcement in New Delhi.

The upgrade programme will cover landscaping restoration, signage and interpretation centres, parking, access for the differently-abled, amenities for visitors, including toilets, illumination and plans for benefiting communities around them. The decision has come at a right time when heritage structures are being pulled down in the name of development.” It makes sense because the historic monument is in dire need of funds to carry out renovation works like erasing graffiti once and for all and maintaining sanitation each day. Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao can take delight from this development because the tombs adjoin his ‘chosen’ area-the parade grounds in the Golconda fort vicinity.
