Pedda Cheruvu is located in Raja Bollaram village of Medchal mandal. The lake is covered by the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority’s (HMDA) Lake Protection Committee. It was surveyed in 2013 and according to the report the lake has dried up entirely. The full tank level (FTL) area is 57 acres and the bund length is 664 metres. The lake’s perimeter is 2.4 km. The lake is 45 km away from the Secunderabad Railway Station and 50 km away from the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport. Muraripally, Lambadi Tanda, Ravalkole, Dasarpally and Turkapally are a few of the neighbouring villages. The nearest railway station is at Medchal.

History

According to the locals, the lake was given the name due to its large spread area. It was the main source of drinking water and also satisfied the agricultural needs of the villagers during the time of the Nizams. The village was under the firman (supervision and administrative control) of a raja appointed by the then Nizam.

Problems

Narayana Gowd, sarpanch, said, “The lake bed is bone dry. It is due to the lack of rainfalls in recent years and also due to the high altitude inflow channels being blocked. However, the HMDAauthorities made it a green shed area under the urban forestry scheme. Trees were planted around the lake. It is unfortunate that the trees are dying as there is no water to nourish them. The HMDA and the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) authorities must provide water to these trees by bringing in tankers.

There is also a need to fence the entire lake to prevent the possibility of any encroachments. The lake must be covered in the Mission Kakatitya.”Dr Lubna Sarwath, convener of Save Our Urban Lakes (SOUL), said, “The HMDA and other civic bodies must work together and restore the lake. It must be included with those lakes listed in the Mission Kakatiya. Tabs must be kept on private contractors and locals who are dredging sand from the lake bed without the consent of the concerned authorities.”
