LEPRA Society conducted an awareness programme on tuberculosis (TB) at the Blue Peter Public Health Research Center, Cherlapally, on the occasion of World Tuberculosis Day. About 16,000 sputum samples have been tested by the institute so far and 1,900 positive ‪tuberculosis cases have been detected. Around 80 members from Cherlapally and Rampally villages participated in the programme.

About 16,000 sputum samples have been tested by the institute so far and 1,900 positive ‪tuberculosis cases have been detected. Around 80 members from Cherlapally and Rampally villages participated in the programme.

The participants were given information on the signs and symptoms of TB and the Revised National Tuberculosis Control programme. Dr Vaseem Anjum, research medical officer, staff of clinical and epidemiology department and Dr Vijayalakshmi, highlighted the importance of early diagnosis, approaching the government DMC for the treatment and collective effort from all to cure and support the patients. There is a stigma associated with TB and the participants were told that patients should not be isolated. Four persons who had cough came forward voluntarily for testing after the awareness programme.
