Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) made no arrangements to protect or relocate saplings planted on the Outer Ring Road (ORR) stretch if the Hyderabad Metro Rail decides to take up railway works.

The HMDA officials planted around 4.5 lakh saplings and 2.5 lakh scrubs under the Haritha Haram programme around the ORR including the main carriage way (MCW), railway corridor, interchanges, medians, service roads and refurbishment of ORR median. The department has no plans in place to relocate the saplings if the railway or Hyderabad Metro Rail department decides to take up railway work on the ORR stretch.

Sources in HMDA said that 4.5 lakh saplings and 2.5 lakh scrubs have been planted on the ORR. He said that out of the 7 lakh saplings planted on ORR nearly 70 per cent of the plantation had been taken up on railway corridor. He said that nearly 3.5 lakh plants have been planted on the railway corridor of ORR.

A senior HMDA official said that under the Haritha Haram programme, plantation had been taken up on ORR including the railway corridor. He said that in future if any metro rail works arise, the department has no plans to transplant the plants.

The HMDA had handed over plantation work to 13 contractors and the plantation on main carriage way of ORR was taken up by HMDA officials.
