For the first time in Scandinavia history, a women-run mosque opens its doors. Echoing Cuban cartoonist Falco's draw, this initiative aims to change the image of Islam and promote equality between men and women.
Mariam mosque, in Copenhagen, will be led by two Imams. Friday prayer will be only for women. Apart from that, anyone can join in Mariam new mosque.
"It's about changing the image of Islam in Denmark and to demonstrate that there is a spiritual progressive move", says Imam Sherin Khankan. Ms Khankan, who is a well known commentator in Denmark, said the reaction from the local Muslim community has been mostly positive with only “moderate” opposition in some quarters.
A similar project has been proposed in Bradford for British Muslim women.
