No reports regarding casualties or target of the blast have been clear so far.

A security official said initially reports indicate the blast was triggered by a Vehicle-borne Improvised Explosive Device (VBIED), reports Khaama Press.

The official also said that the incident took place in the vicinity of Ministry of Defence and Ministry of Finance compounds in Pul-e-Mahmood Khan.

Pictures emerging from the shows thick black smoke rising from the incident area as there are reports of sporadic gunfire in the area.

Meanwhile, according to media reports, thick black smoke could be seen rising from the vicinity of US embassy in the Afghan capital.

However, the US in a statement reportedly said that the embassy had been unharmed.
