US National Intelligence Director James Clapper says the Islamic State group is capable of conducting a Paris-style attack in the United States, CNN reported Wednesday.

"They do have that capacity," Clapper said in an interview with the US news network.

"That's something we worry about a lot in the United States, that they could conjure up a raid like they did in Paris or Brussels," he added.

Coordinated attacks across Paris in November left 130 dead, and suicide blasts at Brussels airport and the Maalbeek subway station killed 32 people.

Both attacks have been claimed by the Islamic State group and appear to be linked to the same cell of attackers.

Despite Clapper's assessment, President Barack Obama and other senior national security officials told CNN they saw things less bleakly.

"We, here in the United States, face less of a threat than Europe" from the IS group, Obama told CNN.
